i'm a huge wwII buff. i'm fascinated particularly with the european tour of operations stuff. being a nut for good design, i always thought the germans had the slickest uniforms, especially hitler's personal guard - the ss. these guys always come off evil, so when i decided to build a "nefarious" type character to test out some facial rigging ideas, dieter popped outta my head. i've joked about doing a pilot for a saturday morning show about the holocaust, but that's a bit... er, morbid. anyways, here's dieter....

dieter hair concepts & final face mesh- 11.02.04
i've finished tweaking the mesh for the face. more wrinkles will happen in the displacement/bump map. to this point i had no idea what his hair is gonna look like so i whipped up a couple quick concepts in pshop. i like the 3rd one.

dieter WIP - 08.21.04
i'll be updating this image as i finalize his model. he's gone through several iterations up to now. i'm building him without any concept art (which is a big no-no) so it's sort of like free-form sculpting. i'll work on him, get distracted with something else for a few weeks and come back and want to change the whole thing (you can see a really early version of him below). i've gone more and more stylized as i work on him. i'll finish out his whole body before building out the facial rig. i imagine i'll use some german clip or line from an old ww2 movie (like "the longest day") to animate with.

:: first version
an avi of dieter's head with a quick map of a model's face projected onto it. i was fairly happy with the way this had turned out, but it was just too creepy, i wanted a bit more cartoony.
